What every person knows of the Living God
by Leon King1. Every person knows that God is. There is not a man under the sun who doesn't know that God is. The Bible does not make a case to prove the existence of God, but assumes that all men, everywhere know that He is. The Scripture says:
"The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard." -- Psalms 19:1-3.
Hear the testimony of God's book! "That which may be known of God is manifest in them;" - that is, in the unbelievers. God has shown every one of them all that may be known of Him concerning His existence. The created things cry with one consent, "God is, God is!" There is no language or tongue on the earth where the voice of creation goes unheard. Yes, every man, woman and child know that God is! We freely admit that there are people who claim they do not believe that God is - but such people say so in contradiction to themselves. They know He is - but foolishly say in their heart "there is no God."
"Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:" -- Romans 1:19,20.
"And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;" -- Romans 1:28.
This scripture tells us why people deny their belief in the living God. They do not like to retain God in their knowledge. When they give thought about the God in whom they live, and move, and have their being, they do not like the thoughts. They do so because, they know they are accountable to him.
The problem is that men do not like to retain God in their knowledge. While they know that he is, men will not glorify God nor will they give Him thanks. Men's thoughts turn to their own vain imaginations, then God darkens their foolish hearts. Their thinking then changes the glory of the uncorruptible God into images of created, corruptible men and beasts! Men substitute everything that God created for God!
In men's vain imaginations and lusts of their own hearts, they have turned to dishonor their own bodies between themselves .
"...being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, without understanding, covenant breakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them." -- Romans 1:29-32.
This verse brings us to the next thing every person knows about the living God.
2. Every person knows the judgment of God.
One of the things Jesus said the Holy Spirit would do is to convince men of judgment. The Bible says, "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:" The convicting thought of a sure death and judgment is present in the heart of every person. We read that Paul reasoned with Felix of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come - and when he did, Felix trembled. (Acts 24:25) Felix, like all men, was sure of the judgment of God.
The scriptures tell us of the Great White Throne judgment where every person is present. Some (the redeemed, the believing; those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life) are standing with the judge. All other, (the unbelieving; those whose names are not written in the book of life) stand before the judge. Every man will be judged according to his works. Yes, the things people do in their body will be brought before the judge. Notice these verses:
I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire. A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened." -- Daniel 7:9,10
"And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth, and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire." -- Revelation 20:11-15.
Yes, dear reader, every person knows He will face the living God in judgment. Finally, we understand that -
3. Every person knows of sin.
The Bible says that sin is the "transgression of the law." What law? God's moral law! People say, "But, I'm not under the moral law." Ah, but you are. The Bible says that the people of the nations do by nature the things written in God's law. It is written in the conscience as an act of God. It is manifestly true that all men violate their conscience early in life. They do not do what they know is right. All men know they ought to love God with all their mind, soul, heart, and strength. All men know they ought to honor father and mother. All men know they ought not to steal, murder, commit adultery, lie about others, or covet the possessions of another.
"For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another:..." -- Romans 2:14-15.
The problem is that breaking of God's law defiles the conscience. "Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled." -- Titus 1:15. Continuation in sin and unbelief brings the conscience to a place where it is "seared with a hot iron" or "past feeling."
"Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;" -- 1 Timothy 4:1-2 (KJV). "This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness." -- Ephesians 4:17-19.
Yes, all men know that God is. All men know that God's judgment is sure. All men know what sin is. That is the testimony of Scripture and the testimony of experience in life with people. Let us look at the summary of the first part of the book of Romans written in chapter 3:11-19.
"There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness:Their feet are swift to shed blood: Destruction and misery are in their ways: And the way of peace have they not known:There is no fear of God before their eyes. Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God."
We rejoice, though, because God sent His only begotten Son into the world to save sinners. Yes, dear friend, there is a savior. You cannot save yourself. You are defiled in every part, alienated from God, without hope and in need of the mercy of God. You are going to die one day and it is certain you will face God in the judgment for your sins. Jesus Christ is the only hope for wicked sinners. Believe in Him and you will be saved.
All men know
There's never been a man, I know, who walked upon this sod;
Who was deaf to the voice of created things as they pointed him to God.
As the moon and stars shine in the dark to dispel the blackest night,
They cry aloud in every tongue to point men to their Light.
As the great globe seems to tilt somewhat and move the sun about,
The hand of God moves it unerringly on in precision - and seems to shout.
The heathen know it's wrong to steal or take another's wife,
And the incest taboo, well, it's there too, in their conscience as a knife.
The beasts and fish and birds alike all know their maker's hand,
And men do too, because all nature cries from the sky and sea and land.
